Dr. Bruce Evans has devoted his life to making a difference—both as an Emergency Medicine doc and in the lives of children facing unimaginable challenges. While attending medical school at the University of Colorado in the early '90s, Bruce and a group of his fellow students co-founded Camp Wapiyapi. Wapiyapi is a non-profit summer camp for children with pediatric cancer and their siblings. Since its founding, Camp Wapiyapi has provided a place of hope, healing, and fun for countless families, entirely free of charge. The camp now hosts over 100 kids every summer! Bruce and his colleagues have provided the medical staffing for over 30 years; the counselors, oncology nurses, and doctors are all volunteers. Bruce is inspired and grateful to the brave kids and generous volunteers who come to Camp Wapiyapi every summer.
Bruce has become an avid sporting clays shooter since he picked up a shotgin for the first time in 2017. Even though he still considers himself a novice, he enjoys the challenge and community spirit of sporting clays, and he gets out to local courses whenever he can.
In 2024, Bruce combined these two passions by creating the Belt Buckle Challenge Series, a new 501(c)(3) charity benefiting Camp Wapiyapi. The 2025 Series will bring together the Colorado sporting clays community for three NSCA registered shoots, culminating with a Championship Shoot-off for custom belt buckles and top honors at Kiowa Creek on September 20th. "The all-volunteer Advisory Board has been fantastic, and so have each of the Colorado club owners", said Bruce, who credits his fellow sporting clays shooters with making the Series possible.
The inaugural 2025 season features events at three premier Colorado venues: Silver Creek, Colorado Clays, and Kiowa Creek. Every dollar raised supports Camp Wapiyapi, which is completely free to the families of kids fighting cancer.
Bruce is also the founder of Helmet Heads, a nonprofit that provides fun education and free bike/skate helmets to Title One public school 2nd graders across the Front Range. In his spare time, Bruce volunteers as a dog walker at the Denver Animal Shelter—a role he truly loves.
Through the Belt Buckle Challenge, Bruce hopes to create a tradition of fun and fundraising that will help Camp Wapiyapi serve more children every summer.
